Continued closure of upper decks
The upper decks of our double-decker trains will continue to be closed this week. The investigation into the technical issue is progressing promptly, with your safety as our top priority. As soon as the investigation indicates that there is no safety risk, the barriers will be removed.
Updated Traffic Information: The closure of the upper decks on trains means that the onboard seating capacity has been limited to approximately 50 percent, resulting in significant crowding during parts of the day on certain departures.
We apologize for the situation and understand that as a traveler, your journey may be affected. We recommend, if possible, choosing a departure outside of peak hours and working from home if you can. Check the Traffic Status on mälartåg.se or the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) to keep yourself updated with the traffic situation.
To facilitate your travel needs, we have implemented the following:
- Collaboration with SL Commuter Trains (SL Pendeltåg) on the Stockholm C/Stockholm City-Uppsala route. This means that with a Mälartåg ticket, you can also travel with SL Commuter Trains on the mentioned route.
- Train services have been supplemented with buses during peak hours on the Eskilstuna-Södertälje Syd and Tierp-Uppsala routes this week.
- Station hosts are available at Stockholm C, Uppsala C, and Eskilstuna C.
- Train departures on each line with a higher risk of crowding are listed on mälartåg.se under "Traffic Status."
- Train conductors provide information through specific announcements at each station, and information is available on onboard screens referring to mälartåg.se.
The upper decks on double-decker trains were closed as of December 1. The cause was a technical issue that affected a vehicle, causing minor damage to the roof, resulting in an electrical discharge between the overhead line and the outer roof of the train. There has never been a risk of passengers coming into contact with electricity, as the car body is grounded. The safety of Mälartåg's passengers is the highest priority, and the operating company MTR, responsible for safety, has deemed it necessary to investigate the incident, which is now underway.
The investigation is being conducted promptly, and there is no indication of any actual faults with the vehicles.
Simultaneously, an inspection of the vehicle fleet is also being carried out to ensure that there are no other undiscovered damages. As soon as the investigation shows that there is no safety risk, the barriers will be removed.
