Upper floors on the trains are opening again
Starting on Thursday evening and gradually throughout the night towards Friday, December 8th, the upper floors on our double-decker trains are reopening. The safety investigation that was initiated has confirmed that there is no safety risk.
The results of the safety investigation allow the removal of seat restrictions on the upper floors immediately, and all seats are now available .
Safety is our top priority, and the investigation has been conducted promptly and thoroughly. We appreciate the patience and understanding you have shown during the past week. We are aware that it has been very crowded on some departures.
The upper floors of Mälartåg's double-decker trains were closed off from December 1st. The reason was a technical fault that affected a vehicle, causing minor damage to the roof – where there was an electrical discharge between the contact line and the outer roof of the train. There has been no risk of contact with electricity, as the carriage body is grounded. Safety is our top priority, and MTR, responsible for safety, therefore decided that the incidents should be investigated, which has now been done.
The investigation, conducted by MTR in close collaboration with the vehicle owner Transitio, Mälardalstrafik, and Trafikverket, and in consultation with external expertise, has been able to determine that there is no fault with the vehicles themselves. Instead, the damage that occurred happened at two specific locations at Stockholm Central. There was a smaller distance than standard between the train roof and a contact line due to the platform height needing adjustment for accessibility reasons. The distance between the contact line and the train roof has now been fixed by Trafikverket, and there is no safety risk.
There are no other similar locations in Mälartåg's traffic network where there is a risk of similar damage. In parallel with the investigation, a complete inspection of the entire train fleet has also been carried out to ensure that there are no more undiscovered damages.
